Magnesium can really be a godsend in these situations. And it might take trying different brands, possibly with different combinations of herbs. Some people respond really well to magnesium hydroxide, while others do better with magnesium oxide – and different doses.

Diet can be key as well. Allergic reactions to foods can cause constipation, rather than make your nose run or break out on your skin (more recognized allergic responses), so modify your diet and see what happens – great place to start is an Elimination/Detox diet. http://www.brendawatson.com/diet/ or an anti-Candida diet. My assistant was telling me (again) earlier today about how FiberSmart was a miracle for her constipation of over 40 years! Your body is your own experimental laboratory. Don’t give up!

I too have suffered from constipation on and off for years.  I can remember my mother(who was a nurse) giving me enemas because I had stomach aches from being constipated as a child. I have had two colonosocopies, one 8 years ago and one in Oct 2011.The first one the dr. was not able to complete because he could not get all the way in, so I had a barium enema and the results were OK.  He said that I had no issues.  This year, they gave me a new anesthes ia which put me to sleep and relaxed my muscles. This time he was able to get all the way through, but when I woke he told me that I had a tortuous colon and it took much longer to complete the procedure.  I have been trying to increase my fiber, drink more water, eat more yogurt and still have chronic constipation.  Some times I really get discouraged.  I do not want to take any Rx as I already take some meds for other issues.  Guess it is something Ijust have to live with.

I am 30 years old and have been suffering with constipation for the last 5 years so I feel your pain!! My issues consist of gas, TERRIBLE gas pains, bloating (to the point I dont fit in my clothes and look pregnant), stomach aches, unable to eat dairy or meat (cause it adds to the gas and digestive issues), girggling/trapped air in my chest, chest pains and the worst of them all.. constipation!!

I have had many tests done on me.. to find out the following so far..

1.) Sigmoidoscopy = hemmrhoids internal due to straining, some irritation and redness but biopsies say no cancer
2.) Upper scope = some irritation and redness but biopsies say no cancer
3.) Mannometry = lower esophagus is weak causing the trapped air and pains (taking Aciphex and Gas X for this, avoiding gas causing/acid causing foods)
4.) Empty Stomach Study = stomach is emptying into my bowl a little slower then avergage but still in the normal range
5.) Physical Therapy for pelvic floor dysfunction = possible issue with relaxing my muscles in order to go to the bathroom but therapy did not help my issues go away. Still not the cause of constipation but could be caused by it.
5.) Colonoscopy = torturous colon.. my GI dr was not able to complete the whole thing.. she got to my ascending colon and had to stop. She says surgery is not needed unless there was a knot or blockage but this definitely is why I am experiencing gas, upset stomach and bloating. It can also contribute to my constipation but she believes that my constipation for 5 years is what caused the torturous colon because I did not start experiencing these issues until 5 years ago. She Cryput me on a high dose of Amitiza 2 times a day (as the Fiber and Miralax seem to make my condition worse and are hard to manage with this issue)… but I have been on that for 3 weeks and the side effects are starting not to be worth the medication (I randomly feel like I have the full blow flu since taking it.. aches, pains, nausea, chills, headache, hot flashes/face is hot like I have a fever).. and it still takes me over a week before I have a BM..

Now my thing is ok we know what the constipation is causing and doing to my body.. which now this torturous colon is a whole new thing to add to the list.. but……… why is the constipation happening to begin with???

She said she wants me to have a barium test xray to double check the parts of the colon she was not able to see in the colonoscopy to make sure there are no blockages etc. I am so physically and mentally drained from all these tests and all the prep that goes along with all of them….And then if that does not work and the amitiza does not help she wants me to have a bacteria test of some sorts.. where you breath in this bag thing and they can see if they should put you on antibiotics for gut bacteria to regulate you.

5 years of my stomach running my life and I feel every road is a dead end.

Does anyone know the real reasons as to why surgery is not an option for a torturous colon?? It seems its only an option if you have a emergency knot or blockage that forms?? Why not have a surgery that provents that from happening al together?

Dear Accidental Tourist,

Yes I do look and respond, I am a bit behind due to being on the PBS tour accross the country for three weeks.  Then when you posted again on the 20th and the 22nd it moved your original post to the latest date of the 22nd so I am on that date now.  Sorry, I would have gotten to you a little sooner had you not posted again on top of your original one.

But yes, because yours is more of a physiological issue with the colon you may need to take natural laxatives that work on hydrating the colon like ones with magnesium hydroxide or you might could try just taking the magnesium hydroxide by itself – the reason being because of the added length of your colon you absorb the water from it more than normal and it can make the stool hard and make you constipated. You still need to address fiber, oil, and probiotics and more so even.  Try the CleanseMore – two to three at night and see if this works for you.

Again, sorry for the delay in answering.  Hope this helps

I guess there are no moderators here and Brenda Watson really doesn't look at this page.

I have been constipation all my life (I am 59).  Last year I had a colonoscopy and was told that I have a tortuous colon (extra long and with lots of extra turns).  I would like to know if this program can help me get things moving.  Should I be doing anything different that what the book suggests for colons that aren't tortuous?  Thanks so much.
