Dear dawngunter,

It's so sad for premmies. So many drugs.

Out of curiosity, how much probiotic is he taking daily? And in what form? Any omega oils? What type of fibers?

It's great that you've made dietary changes, however since they aren't solving the problem after a month and it's so chronic, going to a gastroenterologist may be a good next move. The generall Gastroenterologist will be looking to rule out physiological issues like strictures or developmental issues, which will be good to know.

Perhaps you can find an Integrative Practitioner near you, or at least a Gastro Doc recommended by one. Here are 2 websites that might help you locate someone. http://www.acam.org and http://www.functionalmedicine.org.

If he was my child, I'd want to know what's going on his gut. There's a terrific test called a CSA – please read info on testing at top of this forum. Generally MDs (other than perhaps someone you might find above) would not be exploring gut environment, both beneficial and pathological bacteria, along with checking for fungus/yeast or parasitic overgrowth – which is what is done with CSA. It's possible an Integrative Doc would order the test him/herself, however you can get the test without a doctor visit. If you'd like, we'll be happy to help you interpret the results.

Hi Brenda,

I have a 4 year old son with severe constipation.  He was born 9 weeks premature and was on many medications in the hospital.  His pediatrician did a stool sample test and found he had zero good flora in his system.  We have also done allergy testing and found he has a severe allergy to milk and casein.  He has been on probiotics for months and has been on a gluten free/dairy free diet for over a month now and he still has severe constipation.  My next move is to take him to a gastroenterologist but I was hoping you might have a suggestion before we do. Thank you for any advice.
