Dear caroll.abigail

Rarely, glutamine, when not being properly metabolized, can stress the liver and kidneys. And so, yes, that sounds like a detox reaction. Common ones are nausea, weak, headache, achy, just as you describe – all toxic responses.

Although glutamine is often extremely effective in healing gut permeability, you can also heal with probiotics and diet. Also, Saccharomyces boulardii, as found in Ultimate Flora Advanced Immunity, is excellent for restoring gut health.

You have 7 channels of elimination (liver and kidneys are 2 of them), and clearly yours are not flowing easily. Intestinew, an excellent product for healing the gut lining, doesn’t help to open those channels.

You didn’t mention what intestinal testing you may have done. Were any of your doctors considered Integrative Practitioners? The symptoms you describe like bone aches, a straining heart, would have me hope you could find a practitioner willing to monitor your progress. Here are 2 websites that might help you locate someone near you. http://www.acam.org and http://www.functionalmedicine.org.

In your case, diet is critical. You mentioned a gluten allergy. Did you notice that, or was that the result of testing? Have you modified your diet in any way?

If it were me, I’d start with an Elimination/Detox diet so I felt I at least had a handle on what foods I could tolerate. http://www.brendawatson.com/diet/   At the very least, I would start on an anti-Candida diet. If your diet is nothing like either of these, make the dietary changes and then wait until you are stable on the diet before moving forward to begin a gentle cleanse. The diet itself will begin to heal your system.

I have created different initial cleanses, depending on your specific bowel habits, health status and toxic levels – to get those channels flowing!

Regaining your health from the point you describe is definitely a serious commitment. Dietary change first, while repairing and supporting your gut, then slowly cleansing in a gentle, tolerable way. The great news is, once your channels are open, your symptoms will decrease — and your energy will increase! I know that sounds like a dream, however many people have made that journey, including me!

Dear Brenda,

I have taken intestinew for leaky gut and have seen some wonderful immediate results. But after a few days, I always get nauseated and weak, and this usually lasts for about 8 hours. I have also had some diarrhea lately, which I associate with the product.

Health background: For the past 2 years I have been suffering from debilitating chronic fatigue along with dizziness, headaches, joint pain, bone aches, severe food allergies (especially gluten), and sometimes what feels like a straining heart with related sensastions up and down the left side of my body. I have seen 10 doctors, none of whom could find anything wrong with me, even on blood tests. When I finally saw a naturopath, she mentioned "leaky gut" but didn't tell me I needed to do anything specifically to heal other than keep my diet allergen-free. It was at a natural food store where Intestinew was first recommended to me, and the difference it made was immiediate and incredible. But always after a few days on Intestinew, I develop nausea and some weakness. I have tested this reaction many times, and it is consistent with glutamine (it happens when I take other products with glutamine in it as well, for example your company's enzymes and probiotics, and has also happened when I took a pure glutamine powder made by Jarrow.) I wonder if you might help me understand why this is happening and what to do about it.

One question/explanation that keeps crossing my mind: Is the glutamine initiating a healing process that is in turn provoking a detoxification reaction? It seems like my body is deeply in need of detoxing–about two glasses of lemon juice is enough to make me feel nauseous, achy, and have a headache for a few hours.

What is your take?

Thanks in advance for your insight. I greatly appreciate it.
