Dear SDee,

I need a little more info here:

Firstly, you mentioned that you're not taking any supplements with probiotics or eating anything that you know had probiotics added. I want to be really clear here – you're saying that you're not taking any probiotics orally at all?

Secondly, did you get a copy of the test results that revealed you had high levels of probiotics in your urine?

If not, did your doctor mention the particular strain of probiotic that was cultured/and also, any other bacteria that might have been present? Usually with testing there will be a list of different types of bacteria. In addition to probiotics (good), there may also be commensal and or pathological bacteria listed. Many tests measure yeast/fungus from the same sample at the same time too. This can be very important information for you. If you don't have one, you might ask your doctor for a copy.

And I can possibly be more helpful if you're able to provide more info.

I have been having a very strong urine smell also. I've been checked and double checked for UTI and vaginal infections.  The only thing my doctor can find is a very high level of probiotics in my urine. I don't eat yogurt or take any supplements with priobiiotics and I don't know how/why I would have such  high levels.  But it must be the probiotics that is making the smell.  Some days its much worse than other days.  I haven't found anything to make it go away.

Honestly I do not know.  The only thing is if it is related to taking a high amount of probiotics it could be the "by products" produced in the gut from the fermentation of the bacteria in the gut and/or from the breakdown of bad bacteria or yeast.

Interestingly enough I experience exactly this when I take probiotics.  A strong odor in the urine begins a few hours after taking the probiotics.  On days that I forget to take them the smell never occurs.  This seems to happen like clockwork.  Any clues as to why this would be?

I will say that the smell doesn't smell somehow 'bad', but is definitely distinct.

If it is not an infection then it may be either something you are eating or you may not be drinking enough water. I do not believe it is related to taking the probiotics as I have never heard of anyone else experiencing this when taking probiotics.  The "bad" bacteria do not travel from the gut to the kidneys to be excreted in the urine.  If there is bacteria in the urine it is usually do to either a bladder or UT infection.

If UTIs and yeast infections have been ruled out, is there something else I can be checking for that would cause such a strong odor in my urine? It is definitely the urine and not the vaginal secretions (period or discharge).  It is not like the smell of asparagus or dead mouse or ammonia as I have experienced all of those in the past.  It is nondescript, but so strong and foul.  I just started the Ultimate Flora Vaginal Formula Probiotic a few days ago and I'm wondering if in balancing the bacteria, the bad guys are coming out in my urine to create this awful smell and once things are balanced, it will go back to normal.  I am truly hoping that is it because then it will be worth it.  Nothing else has changed.  I am on a low (lowest meaning 5 mg or less of oxalate in the food) oxalate diet and a protocol for vulvar pain (Vulvodynia) using natural supplements (Ca Citrate, Mg, NAG), but I've been on this diet and protocol since October so I don't believe either could be causing the issue.  I also take 1&1/2 teaspoons of hydrosol silver twice per day as a maintenance after experiencing many UTIs with major and many antibiotics (both oral and shots) prescribed over the past three years (I did take probiotics hours apart while taking the antibiotics, but they were a brand recommended by that practitioner that had me on the antibiotic therapy.)  I believe I've had some IC type symptoms, but mostly deal with the genital rather than the bladder pain. I am certain I am also peri-menopausal at age 48.  Any insight or opinion you can provide about the urine odor or my condition in general I would kindly appreciate.  I have listened to Brenda Watson's guidance and taken her products at different times throughout these last several years of trying to find wellness.  I appreciate her and thank her for all her work and information as she tries to help all of us get well.
