Can you give too much probiotics to a kid?

Dear Ellen,
I agree that it might be a good next step to back off on the probiotics a bit, just to see if there's any improvement. You can perhaps break the FloraSmart tablet in two – it won't harm the probiotics.
Also, since you suspect Leaky Gut Syndrome, I would also suggest Renew Life Intestinew powder. For his age, half a scoop in water on an empty stomach. He can take the probiotic at the same time if that works better for you.
There is a test called a Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology (CDSA) to really get an understanding of what's happening in his gut. This is the test I talk about all the time because the information is so valuable. I've done this with my own kids. For more information where to get this test, and why, please go to the top post in this forum.
I'd be interested in the results of the bloodwork you've had done. Important for you to know – just because he may not be positive for Celiac Disease DOES NOT mean he may not have a problem with gluten. Gluten sensitivity is much more prevalent than doctors recognize. Avoiding gluten can improve your son's health regardless of the blood test results.
If you decide to move forward on the CDSA, I am happy to help you interpret the results and suggest a program if needed.
I hope this helps!

OfflineMy son is 11 and has Down syndrome as well as was born with Hirschsprungs Disease. I put him on the H.O.P.E. diet back in June. The fiber and the probiotics have helped with the constipation but now we have very bad gas. He is in pain every day and it usually takes him all day to even pass it.. I haven't found any of the enzymes to help at all. He right now is taking your FloraSmart probiotic 12 billion cultures. he is very small for an 11year old only 60 lbs. I'm not sure if his size matters but I was wondering if I should switch the probiotic and then go with less or more?
Also enzymes, I've not been successful with so would appreciate recommendations. He does swallow pills as long as they are not too big. Right now if we could get the gas under the control I may be able to manage the constipation with the fiber etc but with the constant pain, he doesn't want to go to the bathroom at all.
We have had bloodwork done and are waiting for the Celiac results. He doesn't have any bloating or diarrhea so I'm just not seeing all the symptoms for a Gluten intolerance. I do think his symptoms resemble more of a Leaky Gut issue. He has had constipation problems since birth so I know doesn't completely empty his colon.
Thanks
Ellen
