Dear bridget,

Generally on an elimination diet, the restrictions are not forever. The idea is to remove potential allergens and see if he feels any different. Once he seems better, then they'll add back the removed foods one by one. I offer a similar diet myself. http://www.brendawatson.com/diet/ Diet can be a huge component! How great it would be if his behavior is dramatically improved secondary to, say, gluten/wheat removal!!! Or any of the other food stuffs.

I'm sure that this specialist is also rebuilding the gut, so I'm going to defer to him/her with regard to supplementation protocols. Keep in mind if he suffers with severe sugar cravings, that may signal underlying Candida overgrowth. I'm quite sure your specialist has ordered a Comprehensive Stool Analysis to look at gut imbalances.

In my new book, The Road to Perfect Health, there is actually a chapter on ADD/ADHD. We are hoping to have the book by itself available later this year, however at this time the DVD plus Book package is available for pledge at the $210 level from your local PBS station. If it’s not airing at this time in your area, the package can be found here – https://www.wedutv.org/PledgeGiftCatalog.aspx, just in case you’re interested.

Additionally, Dr. Rick Sponaugle – http://www.floridadetox.com, who commented on a few of the brain chapters, looks at ADHD in his practice extensively. You may find his website interesting. He draws many parallels between gut issues, ADHD behaviors, depression, even addictive behaviors. He is friendly with Dr. Amen, who of course has done all that wonderful work with ADD and the brain.

What a great friend you are! I hope this helped.

I'm trying to help a friend who's 12 yr old boy is being medicated for ADHD. She's asking my advice to help her with an elimination diet some specialist put him on. They've taken away sugar, gluten, dyes and preservatives. But they've made it worse by only suggesting certain foods. Very limited. Told her to use frutose in place of sugar and Willow Run margarine. Can't have apples, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, walnuts, berries, peanuts, the list will be relentless on this kid.  And of course dairy. What are your views on ADHD and do you have a book that might help her. Thanks for your time.
