Did You Know That Eating More Fiber Can Help Reduce Suffering from Heartburn and GERD?

A recent study conducted at the VA Medical Center in Houston analyzed more than 900 employees to determine the “onset, frequency and severity” of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) symptoms, including heartburn. The goal of the study was to find out if those symptoms were affected by diet, and whether or not a change in diet may help relieve suffering and prevent the recurrence of the disease. Results indicated that eating high amounts of dietary fat was associated with a greater risk of heartburn (indigestion) and GERD, but that a diet high in fiber was directly related to a reduced risk of heartburn and GERD.

Hi Paul,
You could always try these FitSMART bars: http://www.fiber35.com/products/fitsmart-bars.aspx
They have 10 grams of fiber and I find that eating 2 of them a day and then just making some conscious eating choices in the rest of my diet, I get pretty close to 35 grams.

I read about fiber helping with GERD and do you have any information on Barrett’s which is a complication of GERD. Beside Fiber what suppliments should be taken.
I didn’t know I had GERD I just have a persist cought, losing my voice and horseness.

Exactly as you have been saying for years. Of course the challenge is how to get enough Fiber in your diet. I constantly struggle with this – hell a banana is only 4g – I don’t want to eat 8 a day! Breakfast cereal can get you about another 5g. Chosing the right bread with your lunch time sandwich and stuffing in some veggies may get you another 4g and wholewheat pasta and more veggies for dinner gets me to about another 5g. But there is no way I can get to more than about 20g per day of fiber
